A Nice Cheap Packet Mixture From The Phillipines

I love cheap packet mixtures.

They provide many hours of cheap stamp collecting pleasure.

Here's one from the Phillipines from around 1969 with 20 years or so of stamp chronology.

The cost, only a mere 23 cents for 25 stamps in 1969, now worth ten times the price or more.

BlogMisc/philippines1.jpg

Notice the official stamps with the overprints "G.O." and "O.B."

BlogMisc/philippines2.jpg

"O.B." stands for "official business" and "G.O." stands for "gawaing opisyal",Tagalog for "official business".

Unopened cheap packet mixtures are a favorite in my home.

They're suitable for framing and make great conversation pieces.

Never pass up the opportunity to own an old unopened cheap packet mixture.

Angola On Approval Long Ago

Approval sheets, stamps sent to collectors for sale on approval, were popular in the mid 20th century. They're still popular today and sent by dealers to trusted collectors.

A collector would buy what he or she wanted from the approval sheet and return to remaining stamps to the dealer with payment for those retained included.

Angola, known officially as the Republic of Angola, is a country, and Marxist government, located in Southern Africa.

BlogMisc/angola1.jpg

It is the seventh largest country in Africa and is bordered by Namibia to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Zambia to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to west.

The capital and largest city of Angola is Luanda.

From my collection, here are examples from approval sheets featuring Angola.

BlogMisc/angola2.jpg

Notice the old values. Many stamps have increased substantially in value over the last 50 years.

The Isle of Man - Manx Ceramic Art

The Isle of Man, also known simply as Mann, is a self-governing crown dependency in the Irish Sea located between Great Britain and Ireland.

The island has been inhabited for thousands of years, since before 6500 BC.

On July 28, 1976 the Isle of Man issued a souvenir sheet of nine stamps featuring examples of Manx ceramic art.

BlogMisc/man1.jpg

Isle of Man Scott #'s #89 the Cronk Aust food vessel from the early bronze age, #90 the Sansbury Bowl created in 1851, and #91 a 20th century Knox urn.

BlogMisc/man2.jpg

The Manx are an ethnic group originating from the Isle of Man. They are primarily a Celtic people, though with significant Norse and English influences.

The earliest people in the Isle of Man date to about 8000 BC, the Mesolithic Period, the Middle Stone Age.

The souvenir shhet is not scarce, but you'll have to do a little homework to find it  I'm happy to share this example from my collection with you.

The Cheap Packet Mixture

Beginning stamp collectors discovered that the hobby of Kings could become quite affordable.

Especially so when it came to the cheap packet mixture.

You could have a great learning experience with the cheap packet mixture discovering the customs and history of far away lands.

Known as the "V.K.Series", otherwise known as "Very Kaput" (notice the "V.K. Series" at the bottom tucked and folded towards the back of the cheap packet mixture), this cheap packet mixture features 36 stamps from India and was sold for a dollar sometime in the 1960's.

BlogMisc/packet1a.jpg

The cheap packet mixture was sold in drug stores, department stores like Woolworth's, bookstores, small dry good stores throughout America, in souvenir shops, by stamp dealers and Boy Scout uniform suppliers.

Wrapped in cellophane until the air was choked out of the stamps, here is a lovely closeup of the highly regarded cheap packet mixture which provided a lifetime of pleasure for the stamp collector.

BlogMisc/packet1b.jpg

Although of low value and worth very little, the cheap packet mixture is probably worth less today than it was in the 1960's unopened.

Do you have a wonderful cheap packet mixture story to tell ?

I was unaware that he had suffered a heart attack.

Let us embark on a path of harmonious relations free from dispute, ceasing hostilities.

As American's, our legacy, our obligation is to carry the torch illuminating that state which prevails during the absence of war.

That which is the state of peace for all mankind.

Ham Radio

Scott #1260, issued December 15, 1960, was issued on the 50th anniversary of the American Radio Relay League, the voice for our nation's amatuer radio operators.

BlogMisc/hamradio.jpg

I've always enjoyed experimenting with radio.

It began when I was a kid.

I earned a Morse Code / Signaling merit badge in Scouts at 14 and passed the Extra Class Amateur Radio license exam a few years later.

I bought a box of old cards and letters a while back and found this great picture of amateur radio operator Bill Hannah from Trenton, New Jersey in his rocking chair. His radio call sign was W3EUH.

BlogMisc/w3euh1.jpg

Bill sent this great picture to another ham radio operator that he had a convesation with on the 160 meter amateur radio band (1.8 to 2.0 megahertz).

On the back, Bill included a signal report about the 160 meter contact. Q5 means that he heard every word. R8 means that on a scale from 1 through 10 Martin's signal strength was received as an 8, a very strong signal from W4GJV at 3:35 A.M. on the morning of November 3rd, 1940.

Martin was in region 4, indicated by the number 4 in his call sign, and probably in the South. Perhaps Tennessee or Florida, at the time quite a distance for a hobby radio transmission from New Jersey.

Bill had run out of the customary QSL cards, the postal cards sent as a confirmation of the contact between one station and another amateur station. QSL is the three letter designaton, also sent in Morse code, confirming that that amateur radio operator has received and acknowledged the signal of the other station.

BlogMisc/w3euh2.jpg

Amateur radio operators are among the first responders providing emergency communication during war and disaster to assist and rescue those in peril.

During peace time, amateur radio is a hobby that has no equal and provides countless hours of communication, learning and camaraderie with great friends throughout the world.

I never knew Bill. He was before my time. But from the great photo, and his kind inscription to a fellow amateur radio operator, I'm quite certain that Bill had many, many friends.

I wish that I had known him. I'm sure that I could have learned much about science and electronics from Bill.

Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic - Volga Famine Relief

The first postal and charitable stamps of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic, the RSFSR, were issued on December 31, 1921 by a commission to collect donations to help the starving Volga region, organized under the Central Executive Committee with the direct support of Lenin.

The series consisted of four brands of the same face value of 2,250 rubles, of which 250 rubles was postage, and 2000 rubles - a surcharge (an additional fee), which came to the charitable foundation for helping the hungry Volga.

Three of the four lithographed, imperforated stamps are shown here depicting ships bringing food to the hungry on the Volga River.

Scott #'s B14 green, B15 red, and B16 brown.

The fourth stamp is of a different design in blue depicting the administration of aid to a famine victim and not represented here.

There were 3 issues of the stamp designs, 2 of which had original drawings.

The Soviet Philatelic Association created a special center, the representatives of which sold these stamps throughout the world to help many starving people.

Unfortunately, forgeries of of Scott #'s 14 through 16, as well as forged cancellations, are abundant.

These historical stamps, in my collection, have light, clear original gum on the back of the paper which is an indication of authenticity.

The Russian Famine of 1921-1922 affected the Volga and Ural River regions.  A drought in 1921 worsened the problem and turned the situation into a worldwide tragedy.  During the course of the famine, it is estimated that over six million people died of starvation.

Jimi Hendrix

No doubt that Jimi Hendrix was one of greatest Rock & Roll guitarists who ever lived !

BlogMisc/jimi1.jpg

The United States Postal Service seconded the motion with a stamp honoring Jimi.

The Jimi Hendrix stamp was issued to honor "one of the greatest guitarists of all time" according to Rolling Stone magazine. Hendrix used guitar and speaker effects to pioneer a new sound and inspire generations. Jimi could not read or write music.

As a young boy in Seattle, Washington, Jimi was drawn to the guitar, practicing on brooms before he got a real instrument. After a brief time as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army, Jimi became a backup guitarist and worked with top acts such as Ike and Tina Turner, the Isley Brothers, and Little Richard.

Jimi moved to London in 1966 to form the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In less than a year, their debut album, Are You Experienced, topped the British charts with such classics as “Hey Joe,” “Purple Haze,” and “Foxy Lady.” Jimi then returned to America to play the Monterey International Pop Festival, becoming an overnight sensation after lighting his guitar on fire during “Wild Thing.” His stage performances became the stuff of legend – his 1969 Woodstock performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” is considered one of the defining moments of the 1960s.

Jimi's brilliant career was cut short after just four years when he died suddenly in 1970. However, a treasure trove of previously unreleased recordings and countless tributes keep Jimi at the top of the charts and the inspiration of acts in every form of music.

Artist Rudy Gutierrez used acrylic paints and colored pencils to create the design for the stamps. The vivacious, vigorous, active colors resemble the psychedelic artwork from the 1960s. The stamps were arranged diagonally on the panes in blocks of four to give create kaleidoscopic, continually shifting, rapidly changing effect.

ArtCraft

For the next few weeks I'll be talking about the first day covers of ArtCraft along with everything else.

ArtCraft closed it's doors recently after 76 years of making philatelic history.

I'm predicting a sudden, salubrious escalation in the value of the ArtCraft cachet, all ArtCraft first day covers and ArtCraft portrait cards.
Including those connected to the Postal Commemorative Society

Their departure signals the end of an extraordinarily crucial, very important, highly significant and exceedingly meaningful period in philately

A mournful signal which will be heard around the world and lamented throughout the multitude of collectors

Leo and Sam August treasured their associations with the world's greatest philatelists

Leo's contributions to our hobby were significant enough to earn the coveted Luft Award and a place in the American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame.

ArtCraft has well-earned it's place in the great chronological record in the history of philately.

Their raised ink, line-engraved intaglio printed cachets rank among the most aesthetic in the world.

ArtCraft cachets are not just beautiful.

They are works of art that showcase the wonders of the world and illuminate the powers of human creativity and ingenuity.

The Coober Pedy Cover
One of the World's Great Philatelic Rarities

Coober Pedy

Could this become la pièce de résistance de toute la modern Australian philatélie ?

Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia. The town is sometimes referred to as the "opal capital of the world" because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. Coober Pedy is renowned for its below-ground residences, called "dugouts", which are built in this fashion due to the scorching daytime heat. The name "Coober Pedy" comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means "white man's hole".

Opal was found in Coober Pedy on 1 February 1915; since then the town has been supplying most of the world's gem-quality opal. Coober Pedy today relies as much on tourism as the opal mining industry to provide the community with employment and sustainability. Coober Pedy has over 70 opal fields and is the largest opal mining area in the world.

Coober Pedy - no village, no buildings, no roads, just desert, mountains dotted with boulders. A bizarre lunar landscape, but for opal seekers is the most exciting place on earth, where again every day is the true challenge, happiness and luck just a shovel width apart and where life is defined by two words: winners and losers. Coober Pedy, grab your hat, throw it into the air and where it lands start digging !
